Quasars are extremely bright centres of galaxies that are formed when supermassive black holes at the centre of galaxies consume vast amounts of gas and dust. The swirling of this material around the black hole generates immense friction, resulting in the emission of electromagnetic radiation in the form of jets that can be up to a trillion times brighter than the sun. However, as quasars only last for a relatively short period of 10-100 million years, they can be difficult to identify in galaxies that are billions of years old.
